Intel Macs released

So Macworld Expo has taken place and there they presented new Macs using Intel chips.

What I find interesting about this is that they will make no attempt to stop people from installing Windows on these machines, meaning that you can have Mac OS X or Windows, or *gasp* both! Sounds like a pretty interesting setup to me!

However, not sure what the pricing is in your country, but here the new Macs are still terribly overprized compared to the PC equivalent. But I guess you gotta pay for your high maintenance life style… πŸ™‚

  • Still expensive, but definitely makes it an option very much worth considering.

Ahh … Robert … please do not link to sites where I have to register and wait for a confirmation from them to read the article you are referring to.

I am way to excited about those new Macs πŸ™‚

  • Not sure about easily installing Windows if this post is to be believed? Something to do with EFI, whatever that is πŸ™‚

Also the slightly larger screen has a slightly lower resolution – 1440×900 vs 1440×960 for the current powerbook – confirmed it myself via apple store???

I'm excited about the prospect of an intel mac laptop I can dual boot, but am holding off ordering one until they hit the streets and some real reviews are available to read.

    Arní,

I'm sorry, that was very unprofessional of me. Unfortunately, I couldn't find as good articles anywhere, but I can offer you (and anyone else) a Newsvine invitation if you want to read this.

  • Ben Otero says:

First time commenter here. I'd love to read the article and get an invite to Newsvine.

  • Joel says:

Also a new commenter. It would be nice if they'd release some benchmarks comparing the Intel Duo hardware to the PowerMac G5 hardware for compiling and running Java or Mono, I'm really curious how they stack up against each other. I'm interested in reading the articles you linked to if you still have invites available.

  • AJP says:

Shoot, the only reason I keep my Windows box around is for games. Give me a new MacTower ProStation or whatever they call the new PowerMacs, and I'll only need my PC for… um…maybe for sale?

I'll take an invite if you're passing some around.

  • Antti MÃ&fnof says:

Hi, I would like to read the artcile too, but need the invitation to do so. Thanks in advance.

  • Nathan says:

What happened to the 60 pixels?

Also, newsvine is cool. Send me anything you got.

  • Now the fact that you can actually have installed Windows, OS X and Linux on the same computer at a time sounds very interesting. I think this will have a quite impact on how to deal with computers – Apple won't be the geekish, designer thing it once was but "just" another (imo very interesting) operating system.

If I had more time (remember: time is money), I would try it out. πŸ˜‰

I love new commenters! And yes, I love the regular commenters as well! πŸ™‚

Invitations should have been sent to everyone requesting it.

    Steve,

    Interesting link!

    Joel,

Yes, some comparison tests would be interesting.

    AJP,

I agree, given that the information in Steve's link is incorrect.

    Nathan,

    that's a very valid question.

    SilentWarrior,

Problem is, when you see a guy with a Mac laptop in the subway in the future, it's going to be harder to label him. πŸ™‚

  • Paul says:

    I love my Macs!

To be honest, after using Macs for so many years. I can't really understand the Intel Mac spec from the consumer point of view. I can only relate with there G3, G4, G5 tech. Almost like they need a convertion table for me.

But I think this might be the turning point for Macs to be more use out there. After their bad "Clone Machines" in the 1990's.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Paul,

Yeah, I can understand if it's alittle bit confusing. But look at it the other way: imagine now how many PC users that will understand what performance the Macs have got! πŸ™‚

  • Jens Wedin says:

The perfect setup with three partitions and three OS's. I would say that the new Mac is really cheap, instead of having to buy two computers, one will enough.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Jens,

Absolutely! As long as it works that way, that is… πŸ™‚

  • Solon says:

I am quite thrilled with the idea of being able to run Linux, MacOS and Win on the same machine.

As for the Mac itself, it is ridiculously priced here in Brazil. A G5 iMac (no Intels around here, yet) retails for about US$ 3.700. That in a country where minimum wage is about US$ 135,00 a month. Actually, the iMac costs about the national Gross State Product per capita, which is slightly over US$ 3.800 a year.

Which is why you tend to see Macs only in corporations around here, mainly ad companies. But I can assure that, as soon as the MacOS is hacked and ported to regular PCs, you'll see a lot of Brazilians using Tiger on their PCs.

As for Newsvines, if you still have an invitation lying around, I'm more than interested.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Solon,

That sounds really ridicilous! Then I do understand why no regular people have gotten Macs.

Regarding Newsvine, I'm unfortunately out of invites. I'll ask around and hope I can find someone to send you an invite.

  • Scott Blackman says:

Newsvine sounds facinating. Heard a good interview with there creator on the Inside the Net podcast this week. Anxious to give it a whirl.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Scott,

    An invitation has been sent.

  • Barry G says:

I'm hearing the buzz too. Anybody know anything about VMware on the mactel? Would love a newswire invite. Nice blog πŸ™‚

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Barry,

    Thanks!

Personally, I haven't heard anything about VMware yet, but I guess it's bound to come.

I'll do my best to get a Newsvine invite for you!

  • Thickey says:

I have some invites going for newsvine now. email me thickey@thickey.com for one.

  • Daryl Kulak says:

This is a cool conversation. I have migrated our household completely from Windows everywhere to Mac and Linux (Linspire) everywhere.

I love the Macs, the operating system is excellent. I just couldn't go back to Windows. I have no idea why someone would want to install Windows on the new Mac machines. Why do that, except to prove that it can be done?

I'd love one of those Newsvine invitations, if you have any left! Thanks.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Daryl,

Interesting to hear about your migration! πŸ™‚

I think the people that are trying to install Windows on the Intel Apple machines partly love the Apple design, partly have a need to use software that only exists for Windows, partly that they want to be able to have Mac OS X and Windows on the same machine.

I'm really sorry about the invites, I have none left. But try e-mailing Thickey (address is in his comment), he might have some loeft, and was also gracious enough to over some.
