Lost, season three, is finally here – do we ever want Lost to end?

Season three of Lost has just begun, and episode one is outstanding! The first five minutes probably had me sitting with my jaw dropped, and the “reward” scene had me laughing out loud (don’t worry, there will be no more spoilers here)!

Let me try and speculate here why Lost is so good and what I think about its future.

A picture of the Lost castI seriously think Lost has revolutionized the TV-series business. Just watch the sheer number of people following it; devotees all over the world addicted to just getting their latest Lost fix, to be able to make it just one more week.

And just search for Lost on the Internet. Countless forums and web sites are discussing what the hell happened in the last episode, people sharing their view and interpretation on it. The hype has no TV match as I see it.

I’ve met people who have gotten annoyed by Lost. They think that nothing happens, and they get upset that they don’t get any perfectly clear and detailed explanation for anything that happens in every episode.

What the hell is up with those polar bears?

and so on…

To me, that’s the gist of Lost and its outstanding charm. Just like the superb X-files, one doesn’t want everything to be dissected and explained. Lost is instead a state of wonder and mystery, and it gives a fantastic tingling feeling.

Do we want it to end?

The way I’m feeling about it right now, I’m not looking forward to an end, or some kind of concluding episode. If they keep up their so far excellent work with Lost, I can think it can just go on and on. A new and riveting mystery every week, something totally different and spectacular to speculate about. Doesn’t sound too bad, eh? πŸ™‚

So, if you’re looking for a regular series, Lost is clearly not for you. But if you want something outside of the box, challenging your mind and your fantasy, make sure you don’t miss it!

The only bad thing about Lost is probably that it's not very accessible to new viewers. If you haven't been following it since the beginning, you're probably going to feel very, uh, lost.

That said, it's nice to have that familiar feeling of impatience waiting 7 days for the next episode to roll around again.

  • I completely agree — though I wouldn't want to go as far as saying it completely revolutionized it. It's just good.

And yes, I've met many people who stopped watching because they weren't happy with the fact that you just won't get answers for something for months. The first episode of season 3 gives finally some context on events that occured in the very first episodes of season 1!

It just keeps everything very interesting.

  • I used to think I would never want the Nip/Tuck series to end. Unfortunately, the latest episodes from the current season have actually convinced me that some television series should never go beyond season 3. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that Lost is one that will. The season premiere had me yearning for more. I hate when episodes leave so much that viewers get anxious and impatient to see the next weeks episode.

  • I can recommend Carnivale, Robert.

"So, if you’re looking for a regular series, Lost is clearly not for you. But if you want something outside of the box, challenging your mind and your fantasy, make sure you don’t miss it!"

This is definitely true for that series too. Unfortunately HBO cancelled the series after two seasons, probably because it's totally inaccessible for the masses.

Never seen Lost myself, though, I'm gonna keep an eye out for it.

  • Ray says:

People had a similar thing with David Lynch movies, just look at Twin Peaks, Lost highWay. Stories that have weird twists that dont always follow logic and linearilty.

  • Rowan Lewis says:

Personally, I just wish it never started.

  • Lachlan Hunt says:

Lost is the kind of show which people either love or hate, with little in between. Even though I really hate the show, I've seen most episodes up till the end of season 2 simply because I wanted to get some answers, only to find more and more unanswerable questions.

I haven't begun watching season 3 yet because it won't air in Australia for at least 6 months and I haven't decided whether or not it's worth downloading yet. Does the first episode explain what caused the bright white light and the loud noise from the end of season 2 was? Will the people that detected the seismic activity in the area be able to rescue them? Are any other questions answered?

  • Tim Huegdon says:

I'm definately a fan of Lost – in fact, it's probably fair to say that I'm totally addicted.

As far as how many seasons will there be; I distinctly remember seeing an interview with one of the actors on television where he stated that there had originally been 3 seasons, but the network had asked them to stretch it out over a whopping 9 seasons! Unfortunately, I can't find any evidence to back up that statement so let's just call it a rumour!

  • Kalle says:

I'm completely stuck on Lost as well. Unfortunely I missed the first episode so I've got to see that before wednesday!

  • karmatosed says:

I also recall reading somewhere (wish remembered where) that it was estimated to run for 8 years at least.

  • Auke says:

I'm a total Lost fan. Got season 1 and 2 on DVD, and looking forward to season 3. To bad I live in the Netherlands; so I have to wait (or download). Hope it keeps on going! πŸ™‚

  • Lost Season 2 has only just finished for us backwards brits, and I have to say the finale was more frustrating than enlightening – still no answers lol.

But yeah, I'm stuck on Lost too, damn you! πŸ˜€

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Rich,

Yeah, probably not, but some of the recap episodes are pretty good (I just saw the one who covered everything up till the third season).

    Jeroen,

Maybe revolutionized was too strong of a word, but i was in a positive writing flow when I chose it… πŸ™‚

    Derek,

Yes, let us dearly hope that it stays consistently good.

    Harmen,

Thanks for the tip! Mare sure to check out Lost now! πŸ™‚

    Ray,

Absolutely, good point. I think some of Lynch's work has been outstanding, and some has been sub-par…

    Rowan, Lachlan,

    Ah, you're those people! πŸ˜‰

I won't answer your questions to not spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. But I'd say you should give it (yet) another chance. πŸ™‚

    Tim,

Yeah, I heard/read something like that as well.

    Tim, Kalle, karmatosed, Auke, Steve,

Good to hear that you're sharing my interest! πŸ™‚

  • Jonathan Rascher says:

Oops, I mean’t it’s the only show I’ve ever been interested in enough to read blogs and forums about.

  • Jonathan Rascher says:

Yeah, Lost is awesome! I think I read somewhere that the producers want it to go for five seasons. Anyway, it's the only show I've never been interested in enough to read blogs and forums about. I understand that some people don't like the show's pacing and general feeling of weirdness, but I personally love it. I think you just have to let some of the weird things go (of course there are polar bears on the island, why not?) and enjoy the show.

  • For folks new to the series, seasons 1 and 2 are available on DVD. Plus no commercials and you get special features content.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Jonathan,

We feel the same way then! πŸ™‚

    Douglas,

    Good tip!

  • Kat says:

I'm a massive Lost addict from way back but I also live in Australia and we don't have it yet. I've resisted temptation to read transcripts online because I want to watch it. For any other Australian fans, Lost is returning to our screens in February so around four months, I wonder if I can hang on?

    xx Kat xx

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Kat,

Yes, it's the wait that gets to you! πŸ™‚
