2014 has come to an end, and what a year it was! A number of things happened in my life, and among them were leaving Mozilla and joining Google, and a bunch of great trips.

I put together what I, humbly, belive was a great summary of 2013 about a year ago – you should read it! – so I thought I’d take a stab at it again.

Traveling, speaking

Although I had a lot of great trips, I traveled less in 2014 than I’ve done in a number of years: 66 travel days, 79,690 km covered, visiting 11 countries. All photos are available on Flickr – there you’ll find both all travel pics as well as those from other things I did throughout the year.

With speaking, I’ve now presented in 32 countries all in all, and all the slides and videos from my talks are available on Lanyrd.

Santa Cruz, USA [January]

Third year in a row that started with being in California, where I flew out to attend a Mozilla work week in Santa Cruz and also spend some time in San Francisco before going home.

-10 Celsius in Sweden. Just about to travel to California and Santa Cruz for a work week.

Realized that this is the third year in a row that starts with a trip in early January to California. A custom I can get used too. 🙂

After a long work day here in California, a number of us ended up jamming by the bonfire, under the Santa Cruz skyline. Wonderful time! Thanks to John Slater for bringing guitars and making it happen!
It was a long time since I played, though, so I managed to play till my fingers were bloody… Before that we had a big dinner, and I got to have dinner with the entire Technical Evangelism team at Mozilla (something that rarely, if ever, happens) + Chris Mills.

San Francisco, USA [January]

Great day yesterday in San Francisco! Ended up walking from the city center to the Golden Gate bridge with Chris Mills, talking about life. A nice 4-hour walk-around in total. 🙂

I also got to say hi to the seals on Pier 39 as well, haven’t been there for a few years. Good to see them! Although what one of them did should probably not be seen in public…

We also walked by the beautiful and tranquil Palace of Fine Arts, where we saw a man propose to his girlfriend! 🙂

Now time to go home! Feeling a strong need to just hug my children and take it easy.

Paris, France [March]

In March, I went to work in the Mozilla office in Paris – which is like a palace! – and then my wonderful Karin and I stayed around and spent the weekend there.

Went with the family to Sanary-sur-Mer in France, where I spent many summers growing up, to celebrate my mother’s birthday.

Bucharest, Romania [June]

In Bucharest, Romania, for the JSCamp conference. Just back from a very nice speakers’ dinner, local food, music and nice people! Also really good to see Patrick H. Lauke again!

If you wonder what an evening abroad in another country could be like at times, here’s a brief summary of the less-than-pleasant conversation with the taxi driver on the way back to the hotel:

– So, you go to [hotel name]?
– Yep.
– You want massage?
– Eh… You mean normal massage?
– You get massage. And fuck.
– Oh. No, thanks, we’re good, actually. But on that topic, is there any place where we can get just normal massage here?
– Yes! There’s the best massage place!
– Great!
– It’s being run by a porn star!
– *sigh* No, thanks, going to the the hotel is just fine.

Then Gabriel Schiopu was so kind to take me on a full-day excursion to Transylvania and what, according to tourist legend, is Dracula’s Castle.

San Franciso, Highway 1 & California, USA [June]

It was a mixed trip with a Mozilla work week, a week of vacation when Karin and I went down Highway 1 and then to Yosemite, and then rounded off with Google I/O in San Francisco.

What a day yesterday in Carmel, California! Started out with going on whale watching from Monterey on a boat, and we saw a pack of Humpback Whales and a lot of sea lions!

Then on to Refuge, with eucalyptus steam bath, cold pools, fire places, waterfall pools and much more. So extremely nice and relaxing!

Then on to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean in Carmel and an amazing dinner. 🙂

Big Sur. Highway 1. California.

Just had an AMAZING experience! Driving down Highway 1 in California, we came across a massive colony of Elephant Seals – over 100 of them on the beach!

So very cool to see these massive animals (up to 4.9 m, 2455 kg) right next to us!

Hearst Castle

On Monday this week, Karin and I got the crazy idea to drive all the way down from Cambria on the Californian coast to Yosemite National Park. And it was SO worth it! We spent a full intense day hiking and biking around, and it was beautiful!!!

In July, I was very happy to travel over to London with my closest friend, Henrik Box, to see Monty Python live on stage!

Barcelona, Spain [September]

Went to Budapest to give a talk to the Mozilla community about Firefox OS, and had a good time looking around Budapest as well.

San Francisco, USA [November]

Had a couple of days in San Francisco before it was time to go home to Sweden again.

Took the boat over to Sausalito which led to seeing a fantastic sunset of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and then a beautiful night skyline of the city when we went back.

Tenerife, Spain [December]

Went on vacation with Karin and my children to Tenerife at the end of December, celebrating New Years there.

Went on a whale and dolphin safari, where we saw three 22 meter long fin whales, a pack of about 50 dolphins and then a pack of short-finned pilot whales.

We also visited the Teide volcano, which is 3,718 meters, and it was a fantastic moon-like landscape there and quite cold when you got higher up!
