BitTorrent verdict

Recently, a man in Hong Kong was convicted for illegally sharing movies through BitTorrent, and it is probably the first case where BitTorrent technology is involved. I only have two things to say about this:

The movies he shared
If someone is sharing movies like Daredevil and Miss Congeniality, I guess you need to be punished in some way…
Newspaper reports
Why are most newspapers referring to BitTorrent as a program all the time, while it’s actually a technology? Is it because there’s a client named BitTorrent as well, and it takes too much research to be able to tell them apart?

  • Were they the only movies he was sharing, or just two of the *best*?

I'm sure I read about some guys in NY who got busted for sharing movies too… but they had a few terabytes on the go πŸ™‚

    Steve,

I think he shared the Red Planet too, but not loads of movies.

I agree… they are horrible movies

I just noticed something… news like this are the best promotion for p2p software. People who don't know anything about bittorrent will start googling it up. Do you know what this means? More seeders/leechers for bittorrent sites. *cof cof* Not that i gain anything with that. πŸ˜‰

And yes, he does deserve a punishment… They should consult imdb.com and decide his conviction depending on the ratings… πŸ˜›

According to this article he got three months. I think he deserved more, specially since his handle name on the web is "Big Crook". Lame. :-

    Yeah? πŸ˜€

And his handle name doesn't even deserve a comment…

  • Sacha says:

Just for clarity: This guy indeed only shared three movies (Daredevil, Miss Congeniality and Red Planet), but the court decided to punish him hard as an example.

Imo it is completely useless to punish someone who has shared three movies – they should rather find the "big bosses" and put them in prison. Otherwise it will never stop or even worse, what andr3 said will happen. (Which I don't think, since as far as I know, legal download software like iTunes got more and more popular during the last months.)

I think the era of songs, movies, etc. protected by copyright laws is definitely something of the past. Nothing will stop people from sharing music or movies.

To sump up my opinion, the business of art as we have known it is dead. Something new should be created.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Sacha,

Absolutely true. I was merely pointing out that I don't share his taste in movies… πŸ™‚

Oh, and thanks for adding me to your blogroll!

    Chris,

Yes, definitely. Question is what? And is there still time to turn peoples' minds around, or is it already too late?
