My first web site

I don’t know how many of you who can actually do this, but for fun, I’ve kept the first web site I ever built online, and now I want to share it with you!

It was made in 1998 and it consists of general information about Australia, after I spent two months there. I called it Ozpage In Swedish, and it was my first attempts at HTML, CSS, Photoshop and Flash. I’m still pretty happy about that map image, though. πŸ™‚

A picture of the Ozpage web site

On the other hand, this Flash movie (direct link to SWF movie) is fantastic!

So, enjoy! Really! πŸ˜€

PS. Is your first work available online? DS.

Heh, my first site was still online until 2 months ago. I still have a copy of it. And no, I'm not going to share. Still the best looking site I've ever done, that one though.

Yes-ish, I'm one of those people too, I keep almost everything I've ever done, neatly packaged in a retro-container. πŸ™‚

Despite the subdomain name, it's not the first version, but it IS the first page… and not very impressive, I'm afraid, hehe.

  • I am still hosting some pages from my first website '99, only the server has changed.

The Flash isn't too bad; good job I understand the Swedish word for "End". πŸ˜‰

I see you really had the hang of using the U element for hyperlinks, oh those were the days… πŸ˜€

This is bizarre – I was thinking about the very same thing myself the other day. I found a backup CD from 1999 with one of my first ever websites on – it was scary-bad compared to the 2007 version! I might try and get it online someday (broken images due to wrong slashes etc!)

    What a great idea!

My first website was made for my local sailing club, sometime around 1999. It's still live, and gets updated semi-regularly.

Speaking of which, it seems I was a bit ahead of my time with "Web 2.0" rounded corners and gradients πŸ˜€

It's even a liquid layout, though I doubt if that counts when you're using frames…

Actually, this is is so much fun! I guess most of you knows about this but the Wayback machine has been archiving the internet since 1996. I can spend hours looking at copies of old sites there. If that doesn't make me a geek I don't know what will…

Anyway, even if your old work is lost it might still be in the archive

HÃ¥kan, That's actually pretty cool. Thanks for this!

I used to build my first pages with Netscape's WYSIWYG editor. OMG! Even back then, I found the code so confusing I just learned to decipher it myself, and started coding from scratch. I really can't remember my very first try, it probably had loads of animated graphics. I know I tried to build something for our company back then, but I can't find it anymore. But for sure, it had animation on it LOL. I moved on to trying to build my own little search engine in 2000 and gave that up a few years later. In the process I was also learning how to write perl scripts and gave away many scripts for free. Although still a novice compared to the genius' out there, I started charging for some of my larger programs, but it became so time consuming (21 hour scripting days!) I just gave up. Now, I do nothing except stuff for fun.. I just don't want to get sucked in again like before as my time is so valuable now. But hell, I love doing it soooo much! It's not really the design part that excites me (I'm no designer), but the coding is such a turn on mentally!

Aww! Come on, share it! πŸ™‚

    Ha ha! πŸ™‚

    Daz,

Please do! It such a wonderful thing to see!

    Claus,

Man, you must've been a hero amongst designers back then! πŸ™‚

    HÃ¥kan,

Absolutely, the Wayback Machine is a great thing! I've spent way too much time reminiscing the good ol' days. πŸ™‚

Pat, It is, isn't it? πŸ™‚

My hope is that the intellectual challenge I get from coding will keep my mind clear when i get old; because sure as hell, I won't touch that Sudoku crap! πŸ™‚

    Anton,

    That's fantastic! Thanks!

Robert, I must say you have developed as GUI developer since.

I made my first homepage in '95 (for my father's company) and here's the first site I made for my own use (my band). From the golden year of '97. You find it here:

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Oscar,

    Ah, just slightly. πŸ™‚

Design-wise, the STILL web site isn't even that bad (code-wise… well, we all know, right ? πŸ™‚ ).

I have only been doing webdesign for about 3 years now. i am entirely self taught (i realize this doesn’t make me a beautiful and unique snowflake). My first site is still alive and updated. Nested tables YUCK!

Ha ha, that made me laugh out loud! πŸ™‚

And it's great progress, keep up the good work.

Also, I sincerely wish you the best with the Jake's foundation initiative!

  • Actually I always link to a derivative of my first work and post all kinds of obscene nonsense there πŸ˜› Sure, it’s a forum and so not really mine — but all the breakage and errors are my fault. I’ve decided to never fix them — I like them.

These days I only write good code; I learn quickly apparently.
