How to live 14 years longer

A study shows how we can live 14 years longer just by changing our habits.

The advice how to achieve this are:

  • Excercise
  • Don’t smoke
  • Five fruits/vegetables a day
  • Drink moderately

I score three out of four on these (apparently sleep more than two hours per night isn’t in there…). Well, two actually, but I serisouly need to start excercising again. I fail miserably within the fruits and vegetables department, though.

What’s your score?

    2/4

    I smoke, and I don't eat fruit.

I do not, however, get drunk, and I am a gym fanatic (with mountainbiking on weekends).

Can I have 7 extra years? Please?

  • Andy says:

    Alright, I'm gonna die early.

  • Andreas says:

With Andy, 0/4, epic FAIL! If I don't break my new year's resolutions, however, I'll be on 2/4 at least… we shall see.

  • I don't drink any alcohol, but I do smoke (around 30 cigarettes a day..).

I eat my fruits and veggies, but I don't exercise (will start again this year).

All in all I guess I deserve some extra years :p

  • Ceriak says:

Just like you, Robert: excercises yes, cigarettes no, fruits no, drinking rarely (but heavy masses then). Sleeping no πŸ™‚

1/4 Yeah ! Hurray for short suffering !

Let's all be honest, when it comes down to it, do you really want those 14 extra years ?

Think of it, you will be old, let's say those 14 years are the years from your 80th birthday till your 94th.

Those are the years in which for a pretty large percentage of people of that age at least one, if not all of the following statements are true:

    * Can't run anymore, will walk, but carefully. Will start using a walker at some point

    * Become incontinent at some point, start wearing diapers again

    * Hearing is going, always hoarse from shouting and still having the feeling that you are missing most of the conversation ( Damn ! they're talking about me again…)

    * Sight is going, can't keep up with buying new (stronger) reading glasses every other week

    * Memory is going, "what's her name again" visited yesterday or was it the day before or may be it was last week and I'm not actually sure anymore whether she is my daughter, daughter in law or granddaughter

    * Dementia is upon you and you forget who you were married to, that you were married at all and also the name of that strange man/woman sitting next to you

    * Get shaky, parkisons or just old age, it's pretty annoying if you keep spilling half of every glass of whiskey

eh… I think my aim for the new year is to actually attain 0/4. 1/4 still seems too scary a prospect…

    I smoke, and don't excercises;

But I do drink v8 daily. Does that count as 2? Drink and Vegetables!

  • Tommy Olsson says:

I'm the same as you, Robert. Not enough veggies. I don't smoke, but I use snus which does increase the risk for cardiovascular disease (and pancreatic cancer, I believe). I've been exercising regularly for 15 months now, and it's had a great impact on my sense of well-being.

@Jrf: keeping your body and mind fit by regular exercise will lessen some of the suffering you mentioned, unless you get some disease, of course.

  • Five fruits? That many? ;S

I do not smoke or use snus, Rarely drink (maybe 4-5 times a year) but heavy when started. Used to exercise on day basis, but not lately.

Since I have 60 centimetres of hair, I use to claim my metalhead authority when it comes to not being healthy. Handy. πŸ™‚

    Thanks for your comments!

    claus,

That's seven years in my book at least. πŸ™‚

    Andy,

Nah! Just look at Keith Richards. πŸ™‚

    Andreas,

    Good luck!

    Harmen,

Yes, maybe some. But that's a lot of cigarettes.

    Ceriak,

Yeah, I mean, sleep deprivation has to play in somehow.

    Jrf,

Hopefully good health will help ypu avoid that. but yeah, it's not like 14 extra years as a teen…

    adam,

There's probably some nasty additions in v8 which will get you. πŸ˜‰

    Tommy,

    Congrats on the excercising!

    Anders,

Yeah, unless at least a couple of those fruits are for some sex game, I'm out. πŸ™‚

And trust me, if I only had more hair growth I'd have just as long hair, being a metalhad myself.

you blatantly live longer if you have a healthy sex life or does that come under exercise? what about the love!?

i heard you live longer if you play a musical instrument too.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    lewis,

I guess all those fall within the category "being happy", which has proven to give you a longer life.
