Microsoft will use Gecko layout engine in IE 8

When I read the news this morning, it blew my mind! Microsoft will use the Gecko layout engine for IE 8.

Chris Wilson, IE Team Lead, says:

We have had extensive discussions about this internally, and the conclusion is to follow our motto, “don’t break the web”. As a result, we analyzed the other web browser vendor’s rendering engines, and our choice at the end of the day fell on using Gecko for Internet Explorer 8.

It has consistently proven its excellence both in a cross-platform manner and having already been successfully incorporated in a number of web browsers. Therefore, Microsoft will take part in the work to continually improve Gecko and at the same time be able to offer Internet Explorer on all major platforms (Windows, Mac OS X and Linux distributions).

He also, somewhat surprisingly, stated:

We have followed Mr. Nyman’s writings for quite some time now, and while his opinions about Microsoft have seen harsh at a first glance, his takes have always been right at the core of our problems. We thank him for his professional reflections, and hope that we can continue to work together to create a better web browser experience for end users.

PS. Happy April 1st! πŸ™‚ DS.
