Trig.com – is it a MySpace killer?
At the end of last summer, I was invited to try out the new community Trig. And now, at last, the doors are open to the public to take part of it!
What is Trig?
So, what is Trig? To me, it’s a new community who’s out there to compete with the big ones. You can use it just to make friends or try to make a music career and share your music online. In the words of the Trig team:
We want to give you the platform you need, whether you want to be a fashion designer, musician or maybe just looking for new friends and sharing your thoughts with the world, the platform will adapt to you, not the other way around. Originality, Democracy, Revolution. It’s all about you.
What you can do
As with most communities, there are a number of options for you to share whatever you like, and to display information about you. Trig offers:
- The ability to “Trig” things you like to get it a better rating
A totally addictive feature, when you’re logged in to your account, is what’s displayed on your own start page. You get a sort of control panel with lots of interesting information (such as Unread messages/comments/friend requests and Profile views) that you just have to check back on frequently to see just how popular you are and how well it goes.
Together with this there’s a Notifications part in the header letting you know as soon as possible about any incoming message or friend request.
There’s also a nice little gallery section where people can see and comment on your images and watch slideshows.
Live ‘n Direct
Something that I haven’t seen in any other community, at least not presented this way, is the Live ‘n Direct feature. You can get an overview of the latest uploaded songs and images, the latest blog posts and last, but, and this is where it stands out, do an immediate shout that will be published in the Shout BOX.
Is it a MySpace killer?
The big question, I guess, for many communities is if it’s a MySpace killer. While we all know that MySpace is tacky, filled with crap and has very poor code, it is at the same time immensely popular. Trig is cool and looks good, but is it possible to break the spell of MySpace?
I’m not the one to answer those questions, but I’d love if you have used it, or were to sign up to Trig, and let me know what you think!
The name makes it sound like a site for math nerds. I like it.
And it's written with ruby on rails!
Interesting. Although I still think VIRB might take the cake on this one…
I'm not a fan of MySpace, but I do know that my friends like it because they can customize it (to some degree).
I didn't register for TRIG, but if it provides adequate freedom to its users to customize their pages with minimal effort, THAT would make it closer to being a MySpace Killer.
He he. 🙂
Yes, it is.
Yes, I can imagine that Virb is a strong competitor. It seems a bit sluggish, though.
There are a number of skins available, but when it comes to customizing, I'm not sure if you will be content. You just have to try it out, I guess. :-).
Nice! Signed up yesterday evening myself, so go and listen to a few of my tracks: http://trig.com/wobbler
Still haven't found out how the hell I rearrange the order of songs in the palylist though. And, how do I set the tunes to autostart? Am I just a lamuhr that doesn't understand??
Cool, I'm glad that you like it. 🙂
Hopefully, someone else have the answer to your questions, because I don't know.
At the moment, the only way to rearrange your tunes is to add them in the reverse order that you want them in the playlist.
As for autostart, it's a preference in Settings > Privacy.
Personally I do not think it will become the MySpace killer and neither will Virb. Why not? Well for one majority of the market are still on MySpace and it will take more than pretty looks and nifty tools to make them move.
About a month or so ago, I wrote a blog post about why I did not think Virb would be a MySpace killer and I guess you can use the same reasons why this will not either…
Maybe you're right. Only the future can tell. 🙂
I don't use any of the services mentioned, but I know with all those blog services, communities, photo sites, etc.. it gives me a headache. Just like MSN, yahoo, ICQ, etc.. your friends are scattered everywhere 🙁 Gawd I can't keep up! How do you decide where to go, who's safe, and juggle all your friends, and mostly keep up on all those profiles everyone is making at each and every service! And.. there's so much stuff on all the sites I get confused LOL. Robert, I went to both myspace, and trig.. myspace will definately get bonus points for speedy page delivery.
It is definitely an information overflow world we live in… 🙂
I wasn't that impressed by trig as its basically myspace with web 2.0 features… although I must say that they have done a very good job!
I found this other relatively unknown community called Zaplife.com that looks quite promising.
Thanks for the tip!
Nope. It is not a MySpace killer. To late, not enough to difference it. And also they don't have a marketing plan. They thought making it look better and having some more features would make the 200 million or so users of MySpace come over. I think MySpace is pretty unstoppable in their niche.
Facebook is the new MySpace if any but it's a bit different as it is much more closed and more targeted towards college and university people.
Otherwise I think someone has to come with a more radical community experience to topple MySpace. Like Second Life.
Good to see you here! 🙂
Very valid points, and I lean towards agreeing a 100% with what you say.
signed up ages ago and yes this is def a myspace killer. Not only is it well built but the users are dedicated to art and higher thinking. I have made great success on trig since I joined and it keep sgetting better and better.
i love trig ! its a great community for creatives of all types my-space is so fueled by bands all vying for the top spot on Pop Radio
Trig is a bit underground but someday it will resemble My-space even more so enjoy it while it lasts
tig is way better than myspace my space has too many kids on now where as trig seems to be kid free
hi how to get an invitation code……….could you guys help me
