HTML Validator 0.8.4 update fails on Mac OS X Leopard
Just a short post with a word of warning to Mac OS X Leopard users having the HTML Validator add-on – it might also apply to other Mac users.
I just installed the 0.8.4 version, which adds serial parsing and validating (W3C and Tidy) to the Mac; this has been available some time for PC and Linux users, and finally it was Mac users turn as well. However, Firefox completely hangs for me, the address field isn’t updated, the Back and Forward buttons stop working etc.
So, my advice is to not install this update until it’s more stable. If you already have, and experience the same mess as I do, older versions are also available for download.
Also, if anyone knows how to get it to work friendly with Firefox, let me know!
Just as Anthony suggested, getting the proper version manually seems to work just fine.
The new update did not work in Linux as well – got this error…

I am using Fedora 8. I am going to try 0.8.4.1
I had trouble with this on OS X Tiger, but downloading the update manually (I guess of version 0.8.4.1, I can’t check at the moment as I’m at work) sorted all the problems out. I’m glad it did as well… HTML Validator is one of my favourite plugins!
Have you tried version 0.8.4.1?
It is supposed to be the one for Mac OS X…
I haven't tried it yet, as I am at work, and sadly on Windows XP…
Anthony,
The add-on updater alerted me of the update, and installed 0.8.4 automatically. Therefore I removed it, since it didn't work.
Tried your tip and did a clean install of 0.8.4.1, and it seems to work so far. If it's consistent I will update the post. Thanks for the tip! π
Binny,
Sorry to hear that about Linux.
Phil,
Yes, the manual approach seemed to fix it.
Yep, I had the same experience.
Had to remove the Firefox folder in Application Support, even.
Manually installing fixed it here, too.
Harmen,
Ah, good to know in case the above tip isn't sufficient.
And for those of you that are as thick as me, download the file.
Right click it, choose "Open With…" and then choose firefox.
That should give you the extension installation window, that we all know and love π
